Regulation & Policy

New research coming out of the University of Ottawa indicates that the Ontario government no longer needs to offer preferential solar energy pricing through its Feed-in-Tariff Program to large electricity users deploying solar projects. Conducted by Masters of Science candidate Steve Tomosk, his modeling focuses on datacentres and their ability to offset their huge electricity expenses by deploying solar PV, but it applies equally to all large electricity users with 3 MW or greater in peak demand.

CO2 Mitigation Technologies

Natural Resources Canada has awarded CO2 Solutions Inc. an additional $350,000 in funding to continue testing its novel enzymatic carbon capture process. The money, which comes from the department’s ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative, will give the Quebec City-based company additional resources to conduct further testing of its process with a rotating packed bed (RPB) technology from GasTrans Systems.

Research/Commercialization

The University of Waterloo is going to be the home a new research centre focused on helping communities become more resilient to climate change. The Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation (ICCA) was created after Intact Financial Corp. provided $4.25 million in funding to the university.

Renewable Energy

Finavera Solar Energy Inc. has secured a loan so that its Solar Alliance of America subsidiary can continue to pursue additional growth opportunities. The loan, nearly $600,000, is from a consortium of lenders that established through the company's subsidiary, Finavera Renewables Ireland Ltd. The loan will be paid back from the proceeds of Finavera’s sale of the Cloosh Valley Wind Project, expected in the first quarter of 2016.

Renewable Energy

There is tremendous opportunity for Canada to up its renewable energy efforts, according to a recently released report from the Canadian Council on Renewable Electricity (CanCORE), so that it can meet its international climate commitments and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at home. Despite having nearly two-thirds of domestic energy capacity coming from renewable sources, fossil fuels make up about 70% of the primary energy used in the country. This means Canada can do a lot more to increase the amount of renewable energy being consumed.
